Google launched a new tool recently called “Google Translator toolkit” which helps users to upload documents, convert to selected language and finally download the file in same format.Google Translator toolkit extends the portability of translation for web pages,  Wikipedia article and Knol.

Google Translator toolkit

Google Translator toolkit allows users to create a translation by uploading files like like HTML, MS Word, Open Document, Plaint text and Rich text (Limited 1 MB) or by specifying a URL to a web page, a Wikipedia article or a knol. Labnol explains more about how to translate your documents online.

Google Translator Kit upload

Google Translator toolkit allows to create new translation for the languages which doesn’t include support for Google translation service. For instance if you are living in India, there are many languages spoken by people. Google Translator toolkit gives option for users to improve Google translation service for major spoken languages in India like  Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.

We have created new translation with Tamil language, which is shared under Global Translation Memory. If you like to store as a separate Translation Memory, create new Translation Memory and select your Translation Memory name in sharing option before uploading documents or web pages or Wikipedia article or knol.

We have uploaded web page ToTheTech blog to Google Translator toolkit and tried to translate from English to Tamil language, we found some cool options to translate easily. Google Translator workbench comes with two windows, original text window and translated window. Translated window contains word navigation box which allows to navigate word by word for the original text, by clicking previous and next links you can move to previous word and next word. show toolkit button(must be enabled while navigating words) gives translation search results for current selected word in the word navigation box as shown above picture. If there are more than one translation search results you can select the best one and you can vote it. It seems all these translation results and votes are completely shared via Global Translation memory.

The same service already exists for almost 2 years on the web. Traduwiki.org is a translation tool designed for group and organization purposes. Functionalities are the same. Google isn’t innovating on this one.
